Faceted Search

Kids and Teachers alike are still familiar with sections in their school library classified by the Dewey Decimal system. Librarians and Technology Coordinators in K-12 use it daily. If search engines supported search by explicit classifications (Dewey, Library of Congress, others), it could make use of existing taxonomies.

  1. This is basically part of what Robby was saying in Authoritative search criteria. The problem with hanging your hat on this is that it will require someone to continually add authoritative taxonomical data and that has always been problematic when it comes to learning content as opposed to books and other more static content. A useful authoritative taxonomy should not be ignored, but again, it will be a different taxonomy for different communities.
